We will start our tour at the newly renovated Union Station and from there we will walk towards Larimer Square where Denver was founded. Larimer Square has many swanky stores, chic restaurants and historic buildings. Learn as you walk among some of the great monuments and buildings. This part of my tour has more than 10 of my favorite sites in Denver and has some very unique stories about the different sites. As we walk past the historic buildings you will hear about some interesting robberies, hotels of ill repute and some of the old west gunslinging stories.
Close to Union Station is the Oxford Hotel with the iconic Cruise Bar whose style is neon prohibition. Close to the hotel is the Rockmount Ranch Wear store. Rockmount's founder is Jack Weil who lived to be 107. This store is known internationally as jack invented the snap front Western Shirt with signature diamond snaps.
Next stop is Larimer Square. Larimer Square is named after General Larimer who founded Denver. Larimer square has many swanky stores, restaurants with outdoor seating. Each building is historic and is a great place to sit outside and people watch. From Larimer Square we proceed to the Denver Performing Arts Center where you can see the mountains and university campuses to the west and in the distance and the Rocky Mountains. Of course right there we will stop and talk about the icon 40 foot Blue Bear which like the Eiffel Tower was disliked by the city powers but now is loved by all that see the bear. There are also my wife's favorite statues, the Botero statues of Man and Woman. Mr Botero is known for painting and creating overside life creatures and humans that are plump.
From the performing arts center we will continue on up to the Colorado State Capitol. The Capitol was built in the 1890's and it overseas a twelve acre civic center whose architecture was done in a classic greek coliseum style. Not to forget in the same area is the Denver Mint which produces the most amount of coins in the US. It also has had a couple of interesting robberies where some robbers were apprehended but others escaped. Last but not least a block away or so is the Brown Palace. The Brown Palace has hosted most presidents since Teddy Rosevelt as well as the Beatles and of course there was a shoot out involving two men arguing over a married woman.
This tour is about 2 1/2 hours but can be a little longer with group pictures and stops in the Capitol or historic hotels.
Come along on the tour with me and you will learn much more about Denver and the great state of Colorado.
